Refrigerator door alarm vs. high temperature alarm
Actually there are two alarm systems used with refrigerators. The first one signals (beeps) when the door is open longer than set period of time (usually 1-5 minutes). The second one alerts you when the temperature in the fridge exceeds certain limit (10 – 12 Celsius degrees).
Do I really need fridge door/temperature alarm?
No, you don´t . That is something for blood banks, biomedical labs, institutional kitchens or (sorry) morgues.
Standard household absolutely doesn´t need alarm powered refrigerator.
Refrigerator alarm verdict:
Instead of spending money on alarm equipped fridge, teach your family members always to check if the refrigerator door is really closed after they used it.

Is not only a matter of door closed or not, the alarm is really useful on the freezer compartment.
It warn if the internal temperature of this compartment was going over a dangerous value (minus 12 or similar) in particular condition (e.g. during a blackout) and, in the best refrigerator, display also the maximum temperature reached by the compartment: this info is extremely important after an energy cut to know if the cold chain of the food is preserved (not necessary to scrap the frozen food) or not.
Typical situation: during vacation the Grid was under blackout for a period. When u come back home, if u do not have alarm, u never know what happen. With the alarm u are first of all warned that the refrigerator didn’t work for a certain period AND the maximum temperature reached by the food.
You´re right, Paolo. Once I had similar problem with my younger son (12 moths). Somehow he managed to switch the freezer off (with the button in the front) and I noticed it after couple of hours only. Luckily, the insulation of that freezer is that good that it kept the low temperature long enough until I switched it on again (1 hour in the superfreeze mode).
The concept is simple: if the door remains open for a specified amount of time, the alarm will sound. It does not sound every time someone opens the door, just if the door gets left open. When the alarm sounds, the door’s open, energy is escaping and someone needs to go shut the door.I prefer fridge WITH door alarm
This is some great information that you provide here. Some things that I have never thought of when it comes to refrigerators. I have bookmarked your site for future reference, thanks a lot!
